Golden Gate Volleyball put on an impressive display at their first CBVA of the season in Santa Cruz. Outstanding performances were logged by all teams, with a dominance rarely seen expressed in the forty team U16's division. Gold Medal went to the dominant blocking of Caroline Schaeffer, a veteran Golden Gate player and her lighnting quick partner Amelia, who fought through a strong field for the win in powerful fashion. Golden Gate took silver as well with the first time pairing of Candice Denny and Mari Molina. The new pair steadily improved throughout the day and had a big win in the first round of playoffs, knocking out the #1 seeded SandLegs team. Earning Bronze were Golden Gate strongholds Ashley DelGado and Katie Smoot. They played smooth all day but ran into the freight train of Caroline and Amelia in the semifinal and settled for a strong 3rd.
Other notables on the day were Kennedy Roberts and Johara Shuwayat who got an impressive third place finish and Bronze medal in a highly competitive U12's division and lost in a barnburner to the eventual winner. Britany Klein and Sally Noble were both back in action in the U14's and went 5-1 on the day in the first tournament together, just missing the medal rounds in a stacked field. Krissy Smoot and Bridgette Schaeffer both got their first tournament of the season in as well and finished 2-2 and hungry for more. That pair along with Katie, Ashley, Mari, Johara and a total of seven Golden Gate Teams will be representing at the Beach Volleyball Clubs of America Championships down in Hermosa Beach to begin July. If the strong showing in Santa Cruz is any indication, great things are in store as they head to Southern California.
